What to Take into Consideration When Travelling to Thailand

Travelling to Thailand

Traveling to other parts of the world is easy nowadays. But you must first get acquainted with the culture and norms of the place you are about to visit. Thailand is no exception. There are a number of things you have to beware of when traveling to Thailand and we have gathered a list for new arriving tourists to make their life easier.

The Cultural Norms for Travelling to Thailand

There are a number of things that is unique to every culture and might make no sense to foreigners. Knowing these things before going to a new country gives you an upper hand. So you won’t make a mistake when interacting with locals and do something that might embarrass you. Here is a list of cultural things you must beware of when going to Thailand:

  • Don’t eat off your fork, it is considered rude to Thai people, instead use your fork to move the food to a spoon and eat off your spoon.
  • People don’t like to stand in lines. So be prepared to stand your ground when buying stuff from shops or going to amusement in parks.
  • Don’t talk about the king. Although I don’t know what the political or any other reason for this but it’s better to keep your opinions of the king to yourself.
  • Wear something not revealing when visiting temples. It’s a good idea to wear pants and keep a jacket or coat handy when you want to enter the temples. Best outfits are the ones that cover your elbows and knees.
  • There are many transvestites in Thailand, if you see a woman with too much make up or a pretty nice dress, she probably is a lady boy. Make sure to be mentally prepared for that.
  • Some temples require you to take off your shoes. Keep an eye out to see if other people have taken off their shoes, if so you should do it too.
  • Don’t touch people on the head. The head is considered sacred in Thai culture and should not be touched. Also try not to point your feet in the direction of people you are talking to.
  • Haggling is okay everywhere, even when you want to pay for your taxi ride. So don’t be afraid to negotiate a better price with your cab driver.
  • Gambling is permitted on certain days of the week per order of the king. So ask around to see if it’s a day that gambling is permitted before you hit up the horse tracks.

General Advice for Travelling to Thailand

There are lots of other tips and tricks to keep in mind when visiting Thailand. From what to eat to what to do that you wouldn’t be able to do in other countries. And also some general advice for new comers. Again here is a list of a few things that come to mind:

  • People are nice so don’t get freaked out when they strike up conversations randomly or want to know if you enjoy Thailand. Be polite back and some might give you good advice. But beware of scammers, if they seem shady to you it’s a good idea to keep your distance.
  • Take tuk-tuks during the day and taxis during the night, the tuk-tuks are great to enjoy the outside weather while getting where you need to go. Also if some taxi driver tells you that somewhere is closed or out of service, ask someone else too because they might want to bring you somewhere, that they get paid to bring tourists to.
  • Use public transportation, The BTS and MRT are cheap and get you where you want to go fast.
  • The prices are very cheap so be sure to go to premium establishments like 5 star hotels and spas, you will not get the same prices back at home.
  • Always buy your own water, don’t drink tap water because it might not be safe everywhere. Also beware that they don’t confuse your water with beer because many of the brands that sell water also sell beer.
  • The toilets might be different and Thai people use water to wash themselves, if you are not comfortable doing that bring your own tissues or toilet paper with you.
  • Get massages, because they are inexpensive and make you feel refreshed, Thailand is famous for its massages but beware of parlors that say nice or happy girls on their signs. Because they might be a brothel.
  • Be wary of street food, most of the carts selling food are fine but some might not be up to standards of hygiene. A good rule is to eat where there are lots of people buying.
  • Visit waterparks, there are many waterparks in Thailand and it’s one of the most fun things you can do, the Kathu Connection Slip-Fly is our choice, it’s in Phuket and offers a premium service for a cheap price.
